Biography
Professor JC Block graduated from the University of Lorraine (Nancy, F) with a Diploma from the Faculty of Pharmacy in 1972. He received his PhD (Hygiene) from the University of Nancy in 1977. Prior joining the University of Metz as professor in 1980 and the University of Nancy (F) in 1990, he engaged in research in research position at INSERM (Environmental Toxicology).

Professor J.C. Block core research interest is in water treatment and disinfection, focusing on drinking water biofilms. He became involved with water biostability issues and biofilm disinfection while conducting applied research in relation with water industry partner since 1990. He was leading several national R&D programs and more recently European research projects (SAFER, and SECUREAU) allowing stimulating international collaborations. He joined the interdisciplinary research laboratory (LCPME) in 2000, and developed collaborative actions with physicists and chemist about biofilm mechanical properties. He has (co)authored over 130 peer-reviewed publication, and coordonated several working groups at national and european level.

Selected professional activities

- Co-pilot of the European program on "Treatment and use of wastewater sludges" (1981-1986).
- Temporary consultant for WHO from 1983 to 1992 (Morocco) for "Drinking water".
- Member of the scientific committee EERO (director A. Zehnder) from 1993 to 1996.
- Director ot the NanCIE (Water Research Center of Nancy) from 1990 to 1992.
- Co-coordinator of an Advanced Research Institut (NATO) in 1997, in Jesenick (Czech Republic), two "Summer schools" (Universités Européennes) in nancy(F) in 1999 and 2000, and a CNRS workshop on "Biofilm exopolymers" in 2011.
- Director of the research laboratory LCPME (CNRS-UL) from 2005 to 2010.
- Associate editor for Europe of the "Microbial Toxicity Assessment Bulletin" from 1983 to 1992.
- Co-editor of "Water Research", a journal of the IWA, 2004 - 2017.
